New social software to try out!!!

Hi L2Crew! I just returned from the monthly meeting of the Internet Professional Society of Alabama's (IPSA) where the topic of discussion was social software. Boy, there are a few very cool tools that were discussed that I think we may be able to use some of them.

The first one I want to mention is the one I was the most excited about. It is USTREAM. With this you can create a live video stream and chat at the same time. I can see this being used for programs and classes we do do here. People can tune in from home and talk to us at the same time. It looks very promising.

qik is a way to provide live video streaming from your cell phone camera. I want to look at that one too. blogtv has live streaming and chat as well.

Some things to look at for twittering: Twhirl and Seesmic (in alpha at the moment--- video twittering). Kathy you may want bpl to start following a couple of twitter sites, if we aren't already: metrobham and Bham Pulse. Both sound good.

oovoo is a video conferencing tool that allows people to chat and see each other. It is supposed to be better than skype AND you can record the conversation and use it later. How cool is that?

jott.com converts voice to text and it has an api.

brightkite is a locations based social networking tool.

And get this.....evernote is a way to store a photo and convert any words in the pic to text. AMAZING!

What a great time to work in the library field!

Excellent. Thanks for sharing.

As you mentioned, USTREAM, looks interesting. Evernote and jott also are on my list to try.

I had seen something about oovoo before, but at the time the service did not seem ready for prime time yet. But, now all we need are web cams and we can virtually :-) meet face to face anytime.

I just added the two Twitter sites for BPL to follow.

Awesome social software!

Twirl is an Adobe Air desktop app. I have used it on my own computer at home and it is great. It is something that must be downloaded to your PC.

I am using twirl now and I really like it. Kathy, unfortunately you are correct that it is software you have to download...sigh...
