Whoa! SketchUp does some amazing 3-D modeling. A virtual building can be made with all the virtual furnishings resulting in a truly immersive experience.
The only factor is going to be time. Using SketchUp will take tremendous amount of time to get to this virtual world feel.
Admittedly this was my first use of the program, but it took a great deal of time to create a simple desk. Even the demos of creating a table takes a long time.
I can see some uses we might be able to use SketchUp for, but IMHO we can get more bang for the buck going 2-D like Allen County did.
I loved the Allen County Public Library Virtual Tour. It’s well executed combination of a 2-D map with images and video seems an almost perfect tour to me. This type of tour seems much more within our reach and extremely useful.
A little less beautifully created, but effective non the less is the Harvard Divinity School library at http://www.hds.harvard.edu/library/tour/virtual/ . Once again 2-D, this time using a map and stills.
This is just what I was thinking of when it was mentioned at our meeting.
I like both, but I think the Harvard Divinity School tour is more what I imagined. It seems more eye-pleasing and user friendly. Some background music would be nice, though.
It would be ideal to highlight not only our public service areas but what goes on behind the scenes, e.g. in Acquisitions and Cataloging. We're always getting questions about what does "in process" mean and the steps it takes to get a book from Acquisitions to the shelves.
Both of them are very good. The Allen County's tour takes your breath away and appears professionally done. It would be wonderful to have that for Central and our newer libraries.
Harvard's looks good. Perhaps we can start with Central and do a mock up and see what we all think. Does anyone know of a good product that will make the floor plans? Shall we start with the first floor of Central's East building? I can take some photos. Anyone in Fiction or elsewhere interested in writing the text? What else do we need?

Wow that looks great! Allen County’s tour is something to aspire to.
I anticipate looking at SketchUp this weekend. I may have some time to play with it while working in the computer center.
